Young School celebrates diversity with multicultural library display
Students introduced to different cultures
Many students had never heard of the traditional Korean dish Bee-bim Bop until they read about it in the popular children’s book of the same name by Linda Sue Park.
Now they can’t get enough of it and want to learn more.
“Once they read something, it sparks their interest,” said Young School Library Media Professional Debra Primozic. “They want to read more.”

To feed their interest, Primozic has created a display of multicultural books throughout the library, highlighting everything from the customs and traditions of Russia, Italy and Poland to the “mix-mix rice” dish of Korea and the sea turtles of Oman.
“We’re introducing students to the different cultures,” said Primozic, who wants students to realize that we’re all different, yet alike at the same time.

Among the books on display are the fiction novel “Arcady’s Goal,” the picture book “My Name is Yoon” and the nonfiction book “The Librarian of Basra.”
“The children are having a good time with it,” said Primozic.
