5 Ailing People Living in Squalid Nightmare Call Police for Help

Riverdale police say evidence of neglect and abuse prompted them to remove the sick people, ages 50 to 70, and send them to hospitals.

The scene that greeted CBS Chicago TV cameras.

Police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office are looking into the living conditions of five people living in a Riverdale home and subject neglect and abuse, according to CBS Chicago.

The five residents, ages 50 to 70, were reportedly receiving in-home, round-the-clock care but officials said there was evidence of neglect, including bedsores, and squalid living conditions. The residents told police they were forced to give up their debit cards, LINK cards and other personal information to their caretakers.

When CBS Chicago arrived at the home on Saturday, they were met by a handful of people at the house.

“Don’t put that camera on me ‘cause I got the right to break your s---,” a woman shouted from the front stoop as she took a few steps toward the tV cameras.

Police do not know where the ailing residents come from. They are working with the state’s attorney’s office on the investigation. The house has now been red-tagged as unfit for occupancy.
