Homewood-Flossmoor Park District's Apollo and Rover's Run Parks will re-open on Friday evening, September 13, once cleanup work at the adjacent Army Reserve Center (ARC) has been completed for the week. The parks will be open to the public for the duration of further investigation and cleanup activities at the ARC. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the U.S. Army believe there is no risk to the public to reopen the parks while any additional activities are being conducted.
The Illinois EPA and IDPH are confident that any previous potential hazard has been eliminated with the removal of the canisters, which once held rocket fuel, that were unearthed at the ARC during construction activities. The soils surrounding the canisters have been sampled, and both canisters and those soils have been removed from the site. Very sensitive air monitoring during the canister removal and soil sampling activities indicated that no traces of the rocket fuel or any other chemicals could be detected at the ARC fence line. The Army’s investigation work will resume during the week of September 16.
