First Graders Create Multidimensional Math Project

First graders learn early math concepts in a creative way.

At first glance the project may look simple, but first graders at St. Joseph Parish School in Homewood are learning early math concepts in a creative way.

Under the direction of first grade teacher Mrs. Carol Feely, students first created a picture with leaves on a tree and on the ground.  Students then wrote out related addition problems on leaf cut-outs that were placed next to the original tree picture.

“The first part of the project is to develop number sense and learn that addition is the act of combining two or more distinct groups,” Mrs. Feely said. “The second part is to teach the students how to write an addition sentence in horizontal form and explore the commutative property of addition.”
