St. Joseph Falcons Girls Volleyball Take First Place in Mother McAuley Challenge

St. Joseph Falcons Girls Volleyball in Homewood has a lot to celebrate after the sixth grade girls maroon team took first place in the Mother McAuley Challenge on January 17.

Team members Mary Kate Lynch, Nia Flynn, Maggie Dunne, Caroline Koranda, Lauren Hatch, Maya Alborn, and Jada Houston, under coaches Dave Winfrey and Patrick Dunne, competed in the Bronze bracket and went 6-0 in the playoff rounds to win three matches. Teammate Mara Winfrey was out sick and didn’t make the match.

“The team worked hard to move the ball around and played strong defensively against great competition,” Coach Patrick Dunne said. “But our serving was the strongest it has been all season. Coming off the holidays, we didn’t get as much practice in as I would have liked for the seeding round, but when it came down to the playoff rounds, our girls took it up a notch.”

The St. Joseph Athletic Association (SJAA) is part of St. Joseph Parish in Homewood and brings children and families from the parish's religious education program and the parish's school together through athletic competition. Programs include boys and girls volleyball and basketball and girls cheerleading. Its programs support the parish by helping to fund improvements to the facilities. The SJAA also oversees the parish's annual Lenten Fish Fry. The first Fish Fry for this Lenten year will be held on February 15 in Fr. Sayers Hall (school gym) at 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
