Driver Killed After Car Goes Into Dolphin Lake

Updated, 12:45 p.m.: HOMEWOOD, IL - The driver of a car that went into Dolphin Lake in Homewood Friday morning has died.

Emergency crews in Homewood responded to the lake in the area of 183rd Street and Governors Highway at 9:09 a.m. for a report of a car in the water, according to a news release from the village. Two police officers and two firefighters were able to rescue the driver from the water, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after. No one else was in the vehicle at the time.

An initial investigation of the crash indicates the vehicle was travelling northbound on Governors Highway from 183rd when it veered off the roadway in a northwest direction and continued into Dolphin Lake. The driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash.

The MABAS Division 24 Dive Rescue Team assisted Homewood emergency crews in the rescue effort. The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting in the investigation.

The identity of the victim has not been released since his nearest kin has not yet been notified.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Police and fire crews in Homewood have responded to Dolphin Lake Friday morning after a car went into the lake.

A spokeswoman for the Homewood Fire Department confirmed that crews were sent out shortly after 9 a.m.

It is unknown immediately whether traffic in the area would be affected or whether any roads would be closed as a result of the incident.

Unconfirmed statements from those who work in the area indicate several fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were headed down Governors Highway between 183rd and 175th streets.
