Dixie Highway Viaduct on IDOT’s Radar

Plan is to improve drainage in often flooded area within next five years.

HOMEWOOD, IL - Alleviating the flooding on the Dixie Highway viaduct in Homewood is on the Illinois Department of Transportation’s radar, but a final solution could still be years away. IDOT has the improvements on the viaduct in its 2017-2022 program but the first study on it isn’t expected to be completed until 2018, according to a report from the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle. They are in the process of initiating the first phase of the study to explore possible solutions.

The viaduct was closed for hours during a storm on Feb. 28 which left at least one car stalled at the location due to flooding. A 2004 study on the location called for either a 10-year design or 50-year design. The cost for a 50-year design standard would be about $850,000 and the project would only begin if funding becomes available.

Several residents have voiced concern over the flooding problem there over the years.
