Synopsis: The Hot l Baltimore
The US of the 1970’s was a time of great change. The once proud and often times historically significant structures that defined cities and neighborhoods were facing the wrecking ball in the name of urban renewal. The lobby of the Hotel Baltimore serves as both the setting of the play and a microcosm for its time. The residents of the decaying and dilapidated property, mill about the lobby. Facing eviction due to the fact the building was recently condemned, each resident converses, contemplates and reflects on their uncertain futures.
An adept drama written by recently deceased Lanford Wilson, The Hot l Baltimore ran for over 1600 performances after its off-Broadway debut in 1973. The show won: the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award for Best American Play, the John Gassner Playwriting Award and Obie Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
