Floosmoor Public Works Reminds Residents: 'Don't Flush Wipes'

Flushed wipes lead to blockages that can cause sewer backups in basements and sanitary sewer overflows.

Posted on: April 16, 2020

The Flossmoor Public Works Department please asks residents and property owners to stop putting "flushable" wipes, baby wipes, disinfectant wipes and paper towels in your toilet for disposal. These products appeal to customers because manufacturers claim that these items are flushable. Unfortunately, this is not the case. These products are made with a cloth-like material that doesn’t break down in the sewage system and they create blockages in the sewer lines. These blockages can lead to sewer backups in basements and sanitary sewer overflows. Further, these products create blockages in the Village’s pump stations, which lead to expensive maintenance and repair costs. Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. We would like to thank you in advance for your assistance!
