Gimme 5: Homewood Flossmoor's Cheeks Never Stops Working

Senior track standout spends his spring break conditioning himself for a run at his dream of qualifying for IHSA state meet.

Homewood-Flossmoor track standout Cedric Cheeks is spending his spring break on the track preparing for the upcoming outdoor season.

While most of his classmates and many of his teammates are enjoying a few days off, he is running down a dream.

“I texted some of the guys to see if they wanted to meet me here,” Cheeks said.  “So far, I am the only one here.”

H-F has the week off as the Vikings transition from the indoor to the outdoor season. Cheeks participates in the 100- and 200-meter dash events. He's also a long jumper and triple jumper. And he is part of H-F's 4x100 4x200 relays.

He had an up-and-down indoor season.

At the H-F invite, Cheeks took first place in the triple jump and helped the Vikings' 4x160 relay team finish in second place. But he struggled during the indoor season with the long jump.

“I know I will get better with the long jump," he said. "I just need to work at it."

Cheeks is weighing his college options now. He intends to run track on the next level. He is deciding on whether to go to Western Illinois or St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Ind.

Cheeks is looking forward to a successful outdoor season, which he hopes ends with his first appearance at the state meet.

“I just do better when I am outdoors,” he said.  “Every year, my times have gotten better.”
