Turn In Over-the-Counter Drugs at Farmer's Market Oct. 11

The Cook County Department of Environmental Control will take any unused pharmaceuticals or over-the-counter drugs off your hands.

Cook County Department of Environmental Control will be present at the Homewood farmer’s market on Oct. 11, 8 am to 1 pm, at Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Rd., to collect unused pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications as well as inhalers and mercury thermometers. (DEA-controlled substances and needles are NOT accepted at this event.)

According to the Illinois EPA, studies have found traces of painkillers, estrogen, antidepressants, blood-pressure medicines, etc. in water samples from 30 states. Studies have linked hormone exposure to reproductive defects in fish, and environmental exposure to antibiotics to the development of drug-resistant germs. By disposing your medications through this or a similar event, you help ensure that your unwanted medications stay out of our drinking water and landfills.
