Health Care Costs Jump for Village Employees

The Flossmoor Village Board voted to approve updated health, dental and eye plans for village employees. The new plans all have slightly higher rates than previous plans, but rates did not jump as much as expected.

Village employees in Flossmoor will have to schell out a little bit more for healthcare, dental and eye coverage this year, but the price bump isn’t as high as was expected.

Beginning July 1, the new costs go into effect for employees, with an average price increase of 4.76 percent for medical rates, while dental rates went up by an average of 6.05-percent.

“This is compared to a 25-percent increase that we had budgeted at the time of budgeting,” said Finance Director Scott Bordui.

The budgeted numbers were well above the actual increase due to several factors, Bordui said, including: the effective date on the insurance plan, positive utilisation improvements, including preventative medical use, and improved employee education.

“The budget savings, looking at the insurance part of this, is $109,000,” Bordui said. Some of that savings will be offset by new taxes that will go into effect in January of 2014, which will cost the village about $36,000.

The plan renewals, along with a suggestion to offer village employees new tiered PPO offerings, were passed by the trustees in a 4-0 vote, with trustees James Wilder and Perry Hoag absent.
