The Homewood-Flossmoor Area League of Women Voters recently hosted a wine and cheese party for new and prospective members in the home of co-president Syvia Tillman. Co-president Erin Roeper welcomed the guests and introduced the ten other officers and Board members.
Peg Boivin (Homewood), a member of the League for forty-nine years, gave a brief history of the H-F Area League, which will be marking its 85th anniversary as a League in 2014. In addition to many members who reside in Homewood and Flossmoor, the HF Area League's rolls also include members from Chicago Heights, Crete, Frankfort, Hazel Crest, Harvey, Lansing, Olympia Fields, Richton Park, and South Holland.
Next, Syvia Tillman explained that in keeping with its non-partisan, political mission, the League itself does not endorse any candidate or party. However, individual members are encouraged to be informed and to take an active participation in government. The League, through its studies, forms positions and then works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, influencing public policy through education and advocacy.
Susan Palcek, Voter Services Chair, invited new members to share the reasons why they joined the League. After that the guests continued to enjoy each other's company as they sampled Mrs. Tillman's delicious desserts.
The HF-Area LWV will host its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Homewood Library. The topic for the program will be "Health Issues" with guest speaker, Jennifer Artis, Director of Public Affairs for St. James Hospital and Health Centers.
This is a perfect time to find out more about the League and/or to join. Membership is open to people over 18 years of age. For more information, go to http://hfarea.il.lwvnet.org/index.html Interested individuals may also call 708-828-5391 or 708-799-9721.
