Hillcrest HS Duet Placed Third at Argo Speech Competition
Nylle Graham and Kalila Hunter perform 'The Ultimate Drama'
While you were lying in bed on a cold Saturday morning, a group of Hillcrest High School students endured the frigid weather to catch a 6:30 am bus to compete at the Argo High School Speech competition. The speech team has been diligently practicing and competing since September. Seniors Nylle Graham and Kalila Hunter took Third Place in the Humorous Duet Acting category. They choose to perform The Ultimate Drama, which is a satire of TV commercials and the promises they make. The Speech events are done without any costumes or props, except for a table and two chairs. “They have to ‘create’ the props through their use of hand gestures, transition between scene changes using their body posture, and change voices in the six minutes they are in front of judges and other competitors,” stated Mrs. Stephanie Carrero, Speech Team advisor. The judges were impressed with the girls’ talent. Some of the judges comments included: “Great job!” “You ladies have excellent chemistry!” “Great job switching between characters - this was very natural.” “Your audience was very engaged, because you ladies are engaging!” “Their dedication to practice over holiday breaks and school closings demonstrated what perseverance can achieve. Mrs. Poston and I are very proud of them and their accomplishment,” stated Mrs. Carrero.
