Hillcrest HS Physics Class Cook S'mores in Homemade Ovens

Students see first hand how energy is transferred

Hillcrest High School Integrated Physics teachers took advantage of a bright sunny day to engage students in a real life physics lesson. Physics teachers Julie Kirk, Jacob Mooney, Anthony Rappold, and Linda Griffin were using the sun’s heat to physically show their students how energy works. By using aluminum foil, pizza boxes, plastic wrap, glue, and tape, the students were able to see firsthand how energy is transferred from one form to another. The aluminum foil reflected the sun’s light into the pizza box ovens, and the energy was converted to heat that melted chocolate and marshmallows for the students’ s’mores.
