Phillip Dillman wants more people to connect with the sermons—and he uses humor to reach them.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Phillip Dillman is not your average church choir musician. Dillman, who sings at The First Presbyterian Church in Homewood is the congregation’s official cartoonist. Yes—you read that correctly. He also happens to be the author of Scripture Scribbles: Cartoons from the Choir Loft (HumorOutcasts Press, 2014) and its follow-up book More Scripture Scribbles: Cartoons from the Choir Loft (HumorOutcasts Press, 2015.

Each Sunday, during the church service, Dillman “scribbles” a humorous cartoon that has to do with the message of the sermon. His goal is not to denigrate the message, but to make the message more accessible through the gift of humor.

“People want to know the Bible and they want to learn about the stories and scriptures,” Dillman noted. “I just bring humor into the mix because one of the greatest gifts God bestowed upon human beings is the gift of laughter.”

Everyone, including the minister, waits to see what cartoon Dillman creates each week. Dillman admits that the church members are both his most loyal fans and most ardent critics.

“If a cartoon contains a character or entertainer that older people don’t know, they tend to give me quizzical looks, and the same is true if I draw someone that the younger generations might not know, but overall, the cartoons get a great response and they reflect upon what we read and learned about.”

While the cartoons are funny, Dillman’s devotion and faith come through loud and clear in both books. In fact, Dillman is not shy about who he credits for his talents. Both books are dedicated to Jesus – for being a good sport.
