Homewood Fire Acquires Additional Life-Saving Chest Compression Device
The automated chest compression device can be used in situations of cardiac arrest.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Village of Homewood Fire Department recently acquired its second Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System (LUCAS) Automated Chest Compression device. Both Homewood ambulances now carry this device to be used in dire situations of cardiac arrest. The LUCAS device delivers non-stop, guideline-consistent chest compressions during emergency patient transport.
"The LUCAS device provides quality, consistent chest compressions during resuscitation, creating life-sustaining perfusion to the brain and heart allowing for the best possible outcome for the patient," said Homewood Fire Department Captain John Elashik. "This also frees up the paramedics on scene to perform other life saving measures. The LUCAS device is a great asset to our department and we are fortunate to be able to utilize the technology to assist in saving lives."
Every year in the United States, more than 1,250,000 people suffer cardiac emergencies that result in either death or loss of partial heart function. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that is used when a person is not breathing or their heart has stopped. CPR can save lives by circulating oxygen to the brain and other vital organs until definitive treatment is available. The challenge for emergency responders is to provide sustained, effective CPR at the scene and throughout transport to definitive care. Hazardous surroundings, inclement weather, road closures, or unsafe environments could prolong treatment making it more challenging for paramedics to sustain chest compressions manually. Additionally, first responders become more fatigued performing manual chest compressions.
