Hundreds Without Power During Arctic Blast In Flossmoor

More than 400 Flossmoor residents were without power Wednesday morning.

FLOSSMOOR, IL - Hundreds of Flossmoor residents were without power Wednesday morning as near record low temperatures hit the Chicagoland area. ComEd reported 466 customers without power around 10 a.m., the village of Flossmoor informed residents in a mass email. It was expected that power would be restored shortly after.

ComEd's website showed that about 200 were without power in the village just before noon.

The village shared these tips on how to keep warm during extremely cold temperatures.

  • Maintain the heat in your home to prevent water pipes from freezing and bursting. If the heat goes out in your home or business, turn faucets to a trickle to keep water running in all of the pipes. Even the small movement of water will help prevent the water from freezing and bursting. Bursted water pipes can cause severe damage to your home and business and result in major repair expenses.
  • Warm up using blankets, warm clothing items and other non-electric warming items. Eat warm foods such as soups and stews but do not attempt to heat your house using the oven or stove. Do not run generators or other heating equipment without proper ventilation.

Warming Centers

If residents are without a safe place to keep warm, the Flossmoor Police Department and the Irwin Center in Homewood are available as warming centers.
