Ingalls to Host Uterine Fibroids, Treatment Options May 21

Three out of four women in the U.S. have uterine fibroids, non-cancerous tumors of the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination, constipation and other uncomfortable symptoms. The incidence is especially high among African-American women.

If you or someone you know suffers from uterine fibroids, there’s a safe, non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy available at Ingalls Memorial Hospital called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).

Interventional radiologist Kevin Keele, M.D., will discuss UFE and more at Uterine Fibroids, Treatment Options Wednesday, May 24, 6 – 7 p.m. at the South Holland Community Center. During this free seminar, you’ll learn more about fibroids and about the UFE procedure, during which an interventional radiologist uses an X-ray camera called a fluoroscope to guide the delivery of tiny particles to the uterus and fibroids. The small particles are injected through a thin, flexible catheter. These particles then block the arteries that provide blood flow to the tumors, causing the fibroids to shrink. Nearly 90 percent of women with fibroids experience dramatic relief of their symptoms.

Benefits of UFE include no surgical incision, no general anesthesia, little or no blood loss, significantly less pain, a faster recovery and a quicker return to work and normal activities.

A light supper will be provided during the May 21 program to those who call ahead and register. To register, call Ingalls Care Connection at 1.800.221.2199. The South Holland Community Center is located at 501 E. 170th St., South Holland.
