
In the classroom, as in life, we as educators try to make the most of teachable moments when we can identify them. Teachable not only in terms of science, mathematics, reading, and so forth, but teachable in the moral, ethical, and personal senses.
Great teachers know that their classroom is a single stop on a long academic and personal journey for most students, and they rightfully take each opportunity they can to make sure that latter journey is fruitful. So they are sculpting good students and also good people. And likewise, our best teachers become not just that but also, perhaps, our best role models.
With the passing of Nelson Mandela two weeks ago, we-as educators, as students and citizens-have lost such a role model and such a teacher. Mandela was an incredibly selfless and highly principled leader, and one that we stand learn much from.
