Relatives Relieved Hostages Safe After Harvey Standoff

Cook County Sheriff's Police stormed the house with the aid of an armored car Tuesday to rescue the hostages.

Relatives of the 43-year-old nurse held hostage along with another adult and six children in Harvey Tuesday and Wednesday recounted the ordeal for NBC 5 Chicago. The 20-hour standoff ended at about 9 a.m. when Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart ordered police to storm the home, freeing four hostages and arresting two armed men.

The other hostages were released one-by-one during the standoff, with the nurse escorting each of them out of the house.

Dart at a press conference Wednesday afternoon said an armored car knocked down the front door of the house and officers ascended to the second story of the home where they found the gunmen and hostages.
