Retail Theft, DUI, Stolen Car Stereo: Police Blotter

Homewood Police reports, Oct. 20–23.

THURSDAY, OCT. 23

Retail Theft

Scott Gilmore, 41, of the 4500 block of East 1068 N, Demotte, Ind., was charged with retail theft for allegedly trying to take a circular saw without paying for it from Menards, 17545 Halsted St., according to Homewood police reports.

The store’s security personnel noticed Gilmore take a Skil circular saw, valued at $169, off the shelf and place it on the front passenger seat of his car without paying for it, the report stated. Gilmore then loaded plywood, which he had paid for, into his car, the report added.

Store security detained Gilmore as he tried to drive off and then contacted police, the report stated.

Gilmore is scheduled in court on Nov. 14.

Car Stereo Stolen

A car stereo was reported stolen after a vehicle parked in the Menards employee lot, 17545 Halsted St., was broken into, according to Homewood police reports.

The burglary happened between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Oct. 23, and entry was gained by breaking the passenger, front-door window, the report stated.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 22

DUI

Darnell Williams, 30, of the 4100 block of 177th Street, Country Club Hills, was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane use and failure to signal after a traffic stop at about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 22, according to Homewood police reports.

Williams was pulled over after Homewood police noticed him weaving and crossing the median line while driving his green Chrysler southbound on Halsted Street, the report stated. The officer stopped him in 18800 block of Halsted Street, near Holbrook Road, the report added.

Having trouble removing his driver’s license from his billfold, Williams handed the officer his wallet with the license in it, the report stated. The officer said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Williams’ breath and that his eyes were watery and bloodshot, the report added.

TUESDAY, OCT. 21

DUI

Patrick Johnson, 45, 1600 block of Down Drive, Calumet City, was charged with driving under the influence, speeding and driving without proof of insurance after a traffic stop at around 3 a.m. Oct. 21, according to Homewood police reports.

A Homewood police officer clocked Johnson traveling northbound on Kedzie Avenue in his silver BMW at 65 mph in a 40-mph zone and pulled him over in the 17400 block of Kedzie Avenue, the report stated.

During the stop, Johnson had trouble retrieving his driver’s license and continually laughed, the report stated. The officer also noticed Johnson had watery, bloodshot eyes and could smell a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, the report added. When the officer asked if Johnson had been drinking, Johnson replied, “I had a few beers earlier in the evening,” according to the report.

Johnson performed field sobriety tests and was then arrested by the officer, the report stated, adding that his BMW also was towed.

Marijuana Possession

Laquon Sanders, 22, of the 4700 block of Blarney Drive, Matteson, was charged with marijuana possession, driving without proof of insurance and driving without a rear registration after a traffic stop around 1 a.m. Oct. 21, according to Homewood police reports.

A Homewood police officer pulled over Sanders, who was traveling southbound near the 17500 block of Halsted Street, for not having a working rear registration light, the report stated. While talking with Sanders, the officer could smell a marijuana odor coming from the vehicle, the report added.

The officer had Sanders and his passenger get out of the car, and a search of the vehicle uncovered a black cigar package with a green, leafy substance in it from the center console, the report stated. A field test later determined the substance contained 2 grams of cannabis, the report added.

Sanders was taken in to custody, and the car was impounded, the report stated, adding that the passenger was released at the scene.

Sanders was released on bond, and his court date is Dec. 1.

Car Burglary

A woman reported to Homewood police that someone had entered her unlocked car between 9 p.m. Oct. 20 and 7:19 a.m. Oct. 21 in the 18500 block of Homewood Avenue.

A man reported to Homewood police that someone had entered his unlocked car and gone through the items between 8:15 p.m. Oct. 20 and 8:17 a.m. Oct. 22 in the 18500 block of Gottschalk Avenue.

MONDAY, OCT. 20

A resident in the 19100 block of Pierce reported to Homewood police that someone entered his unlocked vehicle, which was parked in front of his home, between 8 p.m. Oct. 19 and 6 a.m. Oct. 20.
