Rhythms of the Past: A Musical Journey Through Black American History
As Black History Month approaches, Chicagoland is preparing to honor the achievements and cultural contributions of African Americans.
As communities across the nation prepare to recognize the achievements, sacrifices and contributions of the African American community, Olympia Fields United Methodist Church will be hosting a fundraising concert to the tell the story of African American Music. This concert will feature historical rock, blues, jazz and Motown hits and celebrate the enduring legacy of Black artistry.
Set to take place on Sunday, February 23, 2025 from 2:30pm until 4:30pm, this special afternoon will bring together musicians and vocalists to explore the rich tapestry of African American music. From blues that once resonated through fields to jazz that sparked cultural revolutions, the concert promises to transport audiences through history, blending education and inspiration in a powerful performance.
African American music has long been a cornerstone of American culture. Each genre carries a narrative of resilience, creativity, and transformation. These musical traditions are more than entertainment; they are a living record of Black experiences, aspirations, and struggles.

A choir member at Olympia Fields United Methodist church, explains: "African American music is a bridge between the past and present. It tells stories of survival during slavery, empowerment during the Civil Rights Movement, and joy in the moments of Triumph. To honor these sounds is to honor the people who created them."
Proceeds from the event will support Olympia Field United Methodist church and the services that they provide to the community. OFUMC is dedicated to advancing education, economic opportunity and social justice.

"This concert isn't about just looking back-it's about investing in our future," says a member of Olympia Fields UMC. "We want to empower our community while celebrating the rich heritage that inspires us all."
Tickets are available now through eventbrite. General admission is $15, with packages offering lunch. People of all backgrounds are invited to come together in appreciation of African American music, history and culture.
