South Suburban Man Charged In Off-Duty Chicago Cop Shooting

A Riverdale man was arrested and charged in the shooting of an off-duty, Chicago police officer and her daughter.
Anthony Gates, 28, of the 13600 block of South Eggleston, was charged with two felony counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.

He is accused of shooting Officer Samella Ramirez, a 24-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, and her daughter late Tuesday evening.
The Riverdale man was the ex-boyfriend of Ramirez’s daughter. Police said Gates approached both woman and began arguing with the daughter. He then took out a gun and opened fire on the police officer.

After the shooting, Gates took the couple’s young child and fled. He was later apprehended on the Near North Side. The child was recovered unharmed, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Ramirez, described by her colleagues as “a tough cookie” when working the streets as a narcotics officer, sustained gunshot wounds to her neck, face and forearms, police officials said.
The off-duty police officer remains in critical but stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago Police News Affairs said.
The 21-year-old daughter was also wounded with her mother. She is listed in stable condition at Northwestern hospital after being shot in the thigh.
Ramirez is 49 years old and the recipient of 23 departmental awards, including 11 honorable mentions, according to police officials.
Police arrested Gates three hours after the alleged shootings near Cabrini Green.
Gates is due in Central Bond Court at 26th and California on Thursday.
