'Uglies' Series by Scott Westerfeld

In June, we will be looking at a few of the popular Young Adult series. We will be covering the Harry Potter series, the Pretty Little Liars series, the Twilight series, and the Uglies series.

The Uglies series is a good series for the tweens and early teens.  It is easy for them to relate to the main character's desire to be part of the older group. Her obstacle is that she must wait until her birthday before she can be accepted for the “Pretties” procedure. After this strange procedure it is nothing but fun and parties.

I liked this trilogy, but was unhappy when a forth book was pushed onto us.  The first three books were great. They told the entire story and wrapped it up nicely in a beautiful and futuristic package. They even promote themselves as a trilogy on the book covers.  However, someone decided that a forth book was needed to undo the nice, neat package and thus our trilogy was no more.

The forth book takes the ideas from the first three and tries to form another group of characters to pick up the story. However, I strongly believe that the forth book was unneeded and adds nothing to the original story.

The Uglies series follows a teenage girl named Tally Youngblood. Tally lives in a world several centuries into the future, in a futuristic city. We find out the world as we know it now has become the “Rusty World” because all the metal that we’ve used has rusted over time.

In order to make sure that their world survives and gets along with the other cities that have spread out, the city develops the “halo effect,” which helps in reducing the amount of disputes and violence. However, they were not satisfied with the results and instead develop a brain lesion that they give to all teenagers to make them more complacent and pleasant. Some people became aware of this procedure and broke away to avoid having it done. This trilogy follows Tally as she longs to be one of the Pretties (which is what you become after you get the operation) and desperately wants to hold on to who she really is.
