Area Schools Opt for Healthier Vending Machine Choices

Heineman Middle School in Huntley is among many area schools currently offering healthier vending machine options to its students, according to a Northwest Herald article. 

The District 158 school's vending machines offers choices such as a 100-calorie pack of baked chips or a V8 Fusion, according to the article. The Northwest Herald reports many other McHenry County schools have followed suit over the past decade. 

The state of Illinois in 2006 banned fruit drinks with less than 50 percent of real juice, fried vegetables, confections and any snacks with more than 200 calories from it elementary and middle school vending machines, according to the Chicago Tribune.
