Severe Storms Forecast for Today; First Frost Could Come This Weekend

The most severe storms are expected late this afternoon through this evening.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to roll through the Chicago area this afternoon and evening,. bringing with heavy rainfall, winds in excess of 65 mph and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

A few thunderstorms are possible this morning but are expected to increase this afternoon and become more organized by evening, according to the National Weather Service. The most severe storms are expected late this afternoon through this evening.

An inch or more of rainfall is expected, which could lead to isolated flooding in some areas.

With storms expected to pass directly over O’Hare and Midway airports, hundreds of flights have been cancelled already this morning, the Chicago Tribune reports. As of 8 a.m., 250 flights at O’Hare and 220 at Midway had been cancelled.

Meanwhile, colder weather is on the way with temperatures expected to drop 20 degrees in a couple days.

Temps in the lower to mid-50s are expected during the day Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures could reach into the low 40s Saturday night.

The first frost of the season could appear Sunday morning in outlying areas, according to the National Weather Service.
