Another Joliet Murder: This Time On Benton Street

A person was shot late Tuesday morning in the 600 block of East Benton Street. Several Joliet police are on the crime scene right now.

JOLIET, IL — The young man who was shot late Tuesday morning in the 600 block of East Benton Street, near Youngs Avenue, has died. Joliet Police spokesman Dwayne English notified Patch that the east side homicide happened at 10:18 a.m.

Officers found a 20-year-old victim had suffered a gunshot to his head. A Joliet Fire Department ambulance rushed the shooting victim to Silver Cross Hospital, where he died.

Several Joliet police detectives and crime scene technicians remained on the scene around lunch. Officers placed several cones in the street where the victim was shot.

"The shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident," English announced.

During the first five months of 2023, the city of Joliet had two homicides.

Over the past week, there have been three homicides.

There was the gunshot death in the 400 block of South Joliet Street of Antoine Shropshire, age 16. And on Tuesday morning, Joliet police learned that the 23-year-old woman who was found unconscious Saturday at her house in the 1000 block of Kelly Avenue died overnight at Silver Cross Hospital from her head injuries.

And Tuesday morning's shooting on Benton Avenue marks the fifth homicide of the year in Joliet.
