Reward Offered For 'Scruffy' Bank Robber, JPD Releases Video

Surveillance video released Monday afternoon shows the robbery unfold.

JOLIET, IL — At least one man was wanted in connection with a bank robbery that happened just after 10:30 a.m. Monday at the New Century Federal Credit Union, 291 Springfield Ave. in Joliet, the FBI confirmed to Patch. Joliet police said the man who went into the bank implied he had a gun, but never showed one, adding that he got a nasty surprise after the robbery when a red dye pack exploded during the getaway.

Police said the man fled in a newer-model black Cadillac SUV with out-of-state license plates.

The FBI said the man who walked into the bank was described as white with brown hair and a medium build, standing about 6 feet to 6'2," and wearing a dark-colored shirt. He had "scruffy" facial hair, a tattoo sleeve on his right arm and a diamond tattoo near his right eye. Meanwhile, Joliet police shared video of the robbery unfolding. The "scruffy" man can be seen approaching a teller with what appears to be an envelope in one hand, then repeatedly gesturing and pointing with the other. He's seen reaching over the counter several times and making a "hurry up" gesture before grabbing cash and stuffing it into the envelope. You can watch the video here.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading directly to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information regarding the bank robbery should contact the FBI's Chicago Field Office at (312) 421-6700.

Joliet police also say anyone who can help identify the suspect should contact Detective Jeff German at 815-724-3029. Tips can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Will County at (800) 323-6734.

An Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network scanner report said two white males, both wearing black shirts and jeans, were seen fleeing the credit union in the Cadillac, heading west on Jefferson Street from Springfield Avenue.

The report said both men had tattoos on their head, neck and arms.
