Bloody Ambush Beating on Will County Courthouse Steps

There was so much blood on the steps the sheriff's department had to shut down the exit.

A young man was ambushed and brutally beaten on his way out of the Will County courthouse Monday morning.

The man spilled so much blood in the sneak attack on the courthouse steps that the sheriff’s department shut down the Jefferson Street exit until the mess could be mopped up.

The beaten 22-year-old had just left a pretrial hearing for alleged teenage murderer Christopher Stamps. Stamps, 16, was charged with gunning down La’Tray Wright, also 16, in October. He fired on Wright and another teen as they ran for their lives, police said. While Wright was killed, the other teen escaped without injury.

Wright and Stamps, were in different factions of the same gang, police said. Hard feelings reportedly developed between the two over unkind Facebook posts and that led to the killing. Police reportedly captured three men in the wake of the beating. They were holding the men but had yet to charge them.

The beaten man was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Stamps’ home on California Avenue was shot up the day after Wright was slain. Police believe the attack was done in retaliation for the fatal drive-by.

During Wright’s wake, two black-clad gunmen opened fire at mourners but succeeded only in hitting a car, a house and Minor-Morris Funeral Home.
