Carjacking Suspect Crashes Into I-55 Ditch Near I-80

Illinois State Police tell Joliet Patch the victim was carjacked in Chicago and state troopers began following the suspect on Interstate 94.

JOLIET, IL — The Illinois State Police notified Joliet Patch that a Chicago carjacking suspect crashed into a ditch near Joliet on Wednesday afternoon along southbound Interstate 55 near Interstate 80. A Troy Township Fire District ambulance brought the suspect to St. Joe's hospital, where he has non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Around 12:30 p.m., Illinois State Police troopers saw a vehicle wanted in connection with an aggravated carjacking in Chicago.

Illinois State Police say troopers tried to pull the vehicle over along Interstate 94 southbound at 75th Street, but the driver refused to stop and a police pursuit began.

According to state police, the fleeing vehicle sped toward I-80 westbound, then to I-294 northbound, and he continued along I-55 southbound until crashing into the ditch at I-80.

One video posted on Facebook showed about a dozen Illinois State Police troopers chasing after the fleeing vehicle as it sped along I-55 in Shorewood shortly before the crash.

No ISP units were involved in the crash, state police said.

After the wreck, the suspect ran from the car, and was captured a short time later, police said.
