Child Dies in Crest Hill Apartment Fire

A woman in her 30s is listed in critical condition.

CREST HILL, IL — A one-year-old child has died after a fire broke out in a Crest Hill apartment building Saturday morning.

Nathaniel Dixon, of Crest Hill, was pronounced dead at 4:16 a.m. at the Presence St. Joseph Emergency Room Saturday, according to the Will County Coroner's Office. Preliminary autopsy results show he died from smoke inhalation.

The fire started at around 3:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Arbor Lane, according to the Chicago Tribune, and was contained to just one apartment.

Firefighters rescued the child and a woman in her early 30s from the blaze, but the child died from injuries, the Tribune said. The woman was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet in critical condition and later airlifted to a burn center.
