Car Flips On Route 30, Passenger Dies, Driver Faces Felony DUI

A 70-year-old man died early Sunday morning near I-55 and Plainfield Road.

JOLIET, IL — A 29-year-old woman from Chicago remains in the Will County Jail facing felony drunken driving charges in connection with an early morning fatality in Joliet on Sunday that killed 70-year-old Gerardo Castaneda, also of Chicago.

Joliet Police responded to Yasmin Castaneda's one-vehicle crash around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, along Plainfield Road near the I-55 overpass, reports show.

"Officers were able to determine that Yasmin was driving a vehicle heading eastbound [on] Plainfield Road when it hit the I-55 overpass causing the car to flip on its side. One of the passengers was pronounced deceased on scene," police reports show.

Yasmin Castaneda and another one of her passengers were initially taken to a local hospital for treatment. "After being released from the hospital, Yasmin was arrested for the above listed offenses," police said.

Will County Jail records show that Castaneda's bail was set by a judge at $100,000. She needs to post $10,000 to regain her freedom.

The 29-year-old woman who lives in the 6000 block of Chicago's South Kedzie Avenue was charged with aggravated DUI and DUI.

About two hours later, another motorist, Alexandria Ivy, crashed into a Joliet Police car that was still on the scene investigating the fatality, reports show.
