CUP CHECK, PLEASE! A Scholarly Talk on a “Jocular” Subject

It turns out that the athletic supporter was actually invented in Chicago in 1874. While it was first designed for Bicycle Jockeys — what we today call Bike Messengers; the “Jock” Strap has changed and evolved over time to be not only supportive but also protective, concealing, and healthful. Its popularity has waxed and waned but most men alive today who played sports can recall when “Cup Check!” was loudly shouted by a coach and showing up to play without one would get you benched.

Our presenter, Ellie Carlson, will explore and illustrate these changes and some of the more unusual versions that seem nearly insane to modern sentiments.
