The death of a 43-year-old Joliet man, whose body was found in a desolate area near the far southern end of Bicentennial Park, is being investigated as a homicide, Cmdr. Brian Benton said.

The victim's identity is not being released until his family can be notified, but it is known he had recently returned to Joliet and has ties to the city, Benton said. He was not living near the area where his body was found, he said.

Joliet police are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered at about 6 a.m. today on the sidewalk of Bluff Street, near Marion, Cmdr. Brian Benton said.

The man sustained "trauma" to his body, but it's too early in the investigation to say for certain if it's a homicide,** Benton said.

The victim did have identification on him, but Benton declined to release his name, age or address.

He was declared dead at 7:25 a.m. by the Will County Coroner's Office, which described the manner of death as "suspicious." An autopsy is to be conducted this afternoon.

More details will be made available later today, Benton said.

Check back later for further updates on this story.

** An earlier version of this story indicated the man's death may have been accidental. That was incorrect.
