Dog Killed by Firework in Joliet

Two men are being sought for questioning in the incident.

A dog was killed Tuesday morning after it picked up a lit firework in its mouth.

At 10:50 a.m. July 7, two men were lighting off fireworks in the alley of the 200 block of East Jackson Street, Joliet Police Lt. Kevin LaBolle told the Herald-News

“The fireworks got the attention and agitated a nearby pitbull who picked up one of the lit fireworks in its mouth,” LaBolle said. “It went off – dropping the animal to the ground.”

The owner of the dog witnessed the incident and called police.

Joliet Police investigators are looking into the incident and seeking the two men for questioning. Messages left with the Joliet Police Department were not immediately returned Wednesday.

The Times Weekly reports that Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the act was intentional and that the men will be charged with aggravated cruelty to animals because they were purposely throwing the fireworks near the dog.
