Driver Darts From Cadillac Clutching His Gun: Joliet Police

JOLIET, IL — An east side of Joliet resident is now being kept in the Will County Jail after Joliet police say Carlos Lee ran from his car Wednesday night, clutching a loaded gun, trying to flee the officers making the traffic stop. Once the officers caught him, Lee was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer and one count of obstructing/resisting a peace officer.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said Lee's arrest took place around 7:45 p.m. and the following events led to his capture:

  • Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Cadillac CTS in the 400 block of Gardner Street for disobeying a traffic control device. The driver refused to stop and sped away from the officers, who did not pursue the vehicle due to safety concerns.
  • A short time later, the officers saw Lee's Cadillac near Fifth Avenue and Sherman Street and Lee was running from the Cadillac with what officers believed to be a handgun in his left hand.
  • Officers ran after Lee and gave him commands to stop, and he ignored them.
  • Officers caught up with Lee in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue and placed him into custody following a brief struggle.
  • During a search of the area where Lee had run, officers recovered a loaded handgun from the ground. Lee was cited for disobeying a traffic control device and two counts of having disobeyed a stop sign.
  • Lee comes from the 200 block of Fifth Avenue, jail logs show.
