Fan Appreciation Night and Fireworks!

The home portion of the Slammers’ season concludes on Sunday with Fan Appreciation Night. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. and fans will enjoy more $1 hot dogs and another spectacular fireworks show.

Abel Nieves will play every position in the field this night.

Nieves has already played every position this season with the exception of center field, catcher and pitcher.

“I’ve never done this in my career so I am looking forward to the opportunity,” Nieves said. “Bart told me we are going to try to get the pitching and catching out of the way early so that will help.”

Nieves has never pitched before but he says he likes to fool around with curves and changes sometimes when playing catch. He’s been the emergency catcher all year for Joliet but has yet to have to put the gear on for a game.

As of Wednesday Nieves leads the Slammers with a .331 batting average. He has seven home runs, 42 RBI and a team leading 52 walks. He is the only player with more walks than strike outs on the team.

The last player to play every position in a Frontier League game was Jared Jordan for Evansville in their last game of 2011.

First pitch on Sunday is at 6:05 p.m. and after the game fans will be treated to a spectacular fireworks show.
