Former Will County Sheriff Recovering From Heart Attack

State's Attorney Jim Glasgow issued a statement Thursday wishing the former sheriff a speedy recovery.

JOLIET, IL - Paul Kaupas, who served three terms as Will County Sheriff until retiring from office in 2014, remains at Silver Cross Hospital after suffering a heart attack, according to several news outlets. The Chicago Tribune reported that Kaupas, who spent 43 years in law enforcement, suffered the heart attack on Wednesday.

Kaupas remains in critical but stable condition, the Tribune reported. On Thursday afternoon, Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow issued a press statement about Kaupas and his health.

Kaupas, a New Lenox resident, didn't run for a fourth term as sheriff in the 2014 election. His cousin, Ken Kaupas lost in a tight race against Mike Kelley, who was just re-elected by the voters of Will County this past November. Ken Kaupas died in 2017 after battling cancer.

"I’ve known Paul for almost 40 years," Glasgow's statement noted. "He is a loyal friend, he retired as a courageous and dedicated law enforcement officer, and of course, he’s a marine through and through. As Paul would say, he will 'kick this heart attack’s ass.' Our prayers are with him."
