Hairspray Stages Successful Opening at Wheaton Drama

The Tony Award-Winning Musical Hairspray opened at Wheaton Drama leaving audiences humming the upbeat tunes & clambering for more.

This endearing comedy follows the exploits of Tracy Turnblad, a pleasantly plump teenager with big hair, a big heart, and a dream…to dance. When she dances her way onto a local television program, “The Corny Collins Show,” Tracy is transformed from social outcast to an overnight teen sensation. But will her newfound popularity give her the self-confidence to vanquish the program’s reigning teen princess and win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, as well as the courage to help change the show’s segregation policy, and all without denting her ‘Do?

With a highly diverse cast of talented newcomers & veterans all working together beautifully to bring their characters to life on the Wheaton Drama stage, The acting, singing, & dancing all blend to create an extremely upbeat and comically touching performance that simply tickles the audiences funny bones & touches their hearts.

Director/Choreographer Patrick Stinson, Musical Director Jean Austin, & Assistant director Cindy Hartigan, have worked hard to create a show that is extremely upbeat and comically touching all at the same time. Stage management for this production is provided by Bruce Ebner, & Leah Rae Witt.
