JOLIET, IL - In November 2017, Joliet Police were called to the Harrah's Casino parking deck where a 74-year-old woman from Joliet was beaten during a vicious purse snatching. Now, the mugger has taken responsibility for his crimes. Late last week, Romeoville resident Benny Moy pleaded guilty to charges of robbery against a senior citizen as well as a charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily injury to someone older than 60.

Three felony charges were dropped under the plea deal with the State's Attorney's Office.

Joliet Patch previously reported that the mugging occurred just before 11 p.m. on November 9, 2017. The Harrah's customer was walking back through one of the Harrah's parking decks. Then, Moy emerged out of the shadows. He hit her in the head and shoved her to the concrete floor. He wanted her purse, and he got it. Moy then left the injured woman and ran off, Joliet Police have said.

Moy's plea deal had been in the works for several weeks but it had to be rescheduled to make sure that the criminal defendant had the appropriate translator in court. Apparently, there was a snafu when a Vietnamese translator showed up; Moy had requested a translator who spoke Cantonese.

Now 65, Moy has remained out of the Will County Jail since Nov. 12, 2017, which is three days after his arrest. He came up with 10 percent of his $125,000 bail and subsequently hired a St. Charles law firm to serve as his criminal defense counsel here in Will County. Moy was represented by Steven Olczyk of Scott W. Sheen and Associates.
