The Illinois Constitution Isn't Getting Much Respect These Days

I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Illinois…

So begins the oath that all Illinois lawmakers take on their first day in office.

Inauguration Day is a day of grandeur.

Proud spouses, children, grandchildren and others fill the Capitol to hear those words.

I often have wondered if the meaning of the words resonates in the minds of those reciting the oath.

To support the Constitution…

I first covered the General Assembly in 1988.

Since then, I have seen many bills approved by lawmakers that didn’t adhere to either the state or federal constitution.

Both Republicans and Democrats are guilty of this political transgression.

But unconstitutional bills pass nonetheless.
