Joliet Central HS Student Arrested For Allegedly Bringing Gun to Football Camp

The teen, a relative of a Joliet police officer, was taken into custody Friday.

A Joliet Central student charged with bringing a gun along to football camp was arrested Friday and booked into River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

The 15-year-old, a relative of a Joliet police officer, was brought to the police station by his relative in law enforcement, said police Lt. Brian Dupuis.

The youth was charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a firearm owner’s identification card, and aggravated assault.

The aggravated assault charge stems from the teen allegedly pointing his .38-caliber revolver at another student, said Dupuis, who noted there was no intent to threaten or harm the other youth.

The teen brought the weapon to a high school football camp on July 29, said Charles B. Pelkie, the spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office. A bullet was located Aug. 1 and the revolver was found Thursday.

Until the revolver was tracked down, it was unclear whether the teen brought an actual handgun to football camp or an Airsoft pistol. The revolver is not a police service weapon and was not issued to his police officer relative, Dupuis said.

The handgun was unloaded when the teen took it to the football camp, Dupuis said.

The youth is due to appear in juvenile court Monday morning. He faces up to a year in the juvenile department of corrections if he is adjudicated a delinquent but could also be sentenced to court supervision.
