Joliet Couple Survives Hawaii Helicopter Crash: WGN

The two were celebrating their engagement during a vacation to Hawaii when disaster struck.

JOLIET, IL - A couple from Joliet vacationing in Hawaii survived a helicopter crash into the Pacific Ocean on Monday after their pilot passed out, several news outlets reported. WGN-TV interviewed Carli McConaughy and Adam Barnett, who got engaged on Saturday during a vacation to Hawaii. On Monday, they went for a helicopter ride on the island Oahu and during their flight about a 1,000 feet above the ocean, their pilot slumped over the wheel, the Chicago television reported.

“At first I thought he was playing a bad trick on us, and when I realized he wasn’t waking up, I didn’t know what to do,” McConaughy told WGN.

According to WGN, Barnett began screaming from his seat in the back urging her to pull up on the controls as they were falling and about to crash.
