Joliet Family Feud Turns Violent, Victim Taken To St. Joe's, Defendant Regains Freedom From Judge
Will County Judge Derek Ewanic often rules in favor of Joliet area criminal defendants when their pretrial detention hearing occurs.

JOLIET, IL — On Tuesday, Will County Judge Derek Ewanic ruled in favor of felony defendant Dylan Quinn's release from custody under the SAFE-T-Act, even though the 29-year-old Joliet man is accused of pummeling his victim's face so badly over the weekend that the person needed to be taken away in a Joliet Fire Department ambulance.
Will County's prosecutors charged Quinn with aggravated battery and domestic battery. On Sunday, Joliet police responded to the 300 block of Pine Street, which is right near Western Avenue, and officers saw a man being treated by an ambulance, according to the prosecution's unsuccessful petition to deny pretrial release for Quinn.
The victim explained that his brother was living at the house in the 1500 block of Marquette Road, but recently got kicked out for being under the influence of drugs and alcohol, the court files show.

The victim told Joliet police that Quinn told him to report to their mother's house, which is where Quinn was staying since being kicked out of Marquette Avenue. When the victim said he arrived there, "all parties started drinking," court files show. Then, after an argument, violence happened.
The victim "could not recall the amount of times defendant struck him, however, (he) stated that defendant struck him numerous times with closed fists and headbutted him," prosecutors revealed.

When the two Joliet men fell to the ground during the family feud, they began wrestling and "defendant also struck him numerous times with his elbows," the petition noted. The victim "admitted biting defendant out of self-defense."
After being taken to St. Joe's hospital, the victim received stitches for a forehead laceration.
When the Joliet police spoke with Quinn's mother, she indicated Quinn was the aggressor, according to court files. She indicated an argument ensued, and the victim declared, "F*** this, I'm done talking to you," before Quinn striking the victim in the face. She indicated the victim did bite Quinn toward the end of the altercation as a last resort of self-defense prosecutors said.
Officers found visible injuries to the victim's face, arms and legs, and his face was covered with blood. When Joliet police first arrived at the call, the victim's face was being bandaged up by Joliet Fire Department paramedics.
Officers found one bite mark on the left side of Quinn's chest, along with scratches on his right shoulder and forearm.
In asking Ewanic to keep Quinn in the Will County Jail, under the SAFE-T-Act, prosecutors pointed out that Quinn's criminal history includes a 2018 driving while license suspended out of Grundy County, retail theft in 2016 in Will County and DUI-drugs from 2015.
In Tuesday's decision, Ewanic ruled that Quinn would be let out of jail and given GPS monitoring under Will County's pretrial release program. The judge ordered Quinn to stay away from his family's house on Marquette Road in Joliet, as well as his victim.
Quinn was also incarcerated in the Will County Jail in 2021, 2016 and 2015, his jail logs show.
