JOLIET, IL —A house on Joliet's east side was destroyed by a fire Thursday morning though the residents of the structure made it out safely, Joliet Fire Department Chief Greg Blaskey told Joliet Patch. The fire broke out around 7:15 a.m. at 212 Stevens St., which is near Cass Street.

The residents told Joliet firefighters that they saw the lights flicker after turning on their portable air conditioning unit in their living room this morning, Blaskey indicated.

Minutes later, the room was engulfed with flames after the residents ran outside to safety. Joliet Fire Station 1 responded to the blaze and received help from the East Joliet Fire Department.

East Joliet provided a water tanker because there were no hydrants in the area. Blaskey said the house is uninhabitable. The Joliet Fire Department believes the cause of the fire is electrical in nature.
