Joliet Losing 1 Starbucks Coffeeshop This Weekend As Part Of Company's Countrywide Downsizing

JOLIET, IL — Starbucks is shutting down more than 250 locations, and one of those closing coffee shops will be the Houbolt Road Starbucks that was built in 2024. The Houbolt Road restaurant opened around the same time that Starbucks built a second location along West Jefferson Street, at the site of the demolished Bakers Square pie and dessert restaurant.

It appears no other Joliet-area Starbucks is planned to close this month, and the new location on West Jefferson Street will continue to stay open. Saturday marks the final day of being open for Joliet's Houbolt Road Starbucks, an employee confirmed to Patch.

A second Illinois location, 2137 S. Perryville Road in Rockford, also appears to be slated to close, according to reports. The Starbucks app shows the Houbolt Road and Rockford locations as closed starting on Sunday.

Joliet Patch previously reported that plans to open a new Starbucks out near the Costco and the Olive Garden restaurant along Route 30 and Interstate 55 were scrapped by the developers of The Boulevard.

Earlier this week, Starbucks announced its plans to close around 250 stores across North America in the coming days.

"While most are benefiting from this overall momentum, some coffeehouses continue to underperform despite the hard work and commitment of all of you," Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said in a letter to employees.

Starbucks said employees at closing locations will be transferred to other stores when possible. Workers who cannot be placed elsewhere will receive severance support.
