Joliet Man Charged Along With Teen in McDonough Street Murder
The 21-year-old man did the driving and the teen did the shooting, a prosecutor said.

The teenager charged with Sunday night’s murder on McDonough Street got some company when police arrested a 21-year-old man for the same killing.
Both Davia Mayes and Demond Fuqua, 16, appeared in chains before Will County Judge Roger Rickmon Friday afternoon. Rickmon set their bond at $1 million apiece.
Mayes was then taken away to the Will County jail. Fuqua, even though he is being charged as an adult, was returned to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center. Both men were hit with two counts of first-degree murder and a single count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jim Long said Mayes was behind the wheel for the drive-by and Fuqua did the shooting. He allegedly gunned down 21-year-old Terion Steward, killing him, and shot a 14-year-old in the foot.
Two other men were in the car as well. One of those two passengers, along with Mayes, informed on Fuqua and said he was triggerman, Long said. Long did not publicly identify the other two passengers but said he would give their names to Rickmon so the judge could order Mayes and Fuqua to stay away from them if they somehow come up with enough bond money to get out of jail.

Steward was killed by a bullet to his head as he was walking near the intersection of McDonough and Joliet streets. Prior to the shooting, a group of as many as eight people had gathered by the corner, police said. As Steward and the 14-year-old walked past the group, shots rang out from a vehicle.
The 14-year-old was treated at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and survived.
One of the two unidentified passengers told police that he, Mayes, Fuqua and the other man were “in that area looking to shoot a rival gang member,” Long said.
