Joliet native Lizbeth Aviles, Consultant at Northern Trust partnered with Joliet Central and West High School teachers to provide her expertise in a stock market game simulation activity over the course of seven weeks.

Miss Aviles kicked off the event with teachers in early April by explaining the simulation activity and its parameters. Teachers Steve Visser, Elise Cochran, and Tim Avants collaborated Miss Aviles within 5 sections of Consumer Economics and 6 sections of Orientation to Business & Personal Finance. During the activity, 160 Joliet Township students tracked how their stocks performed each day and made decisions on which stocks to trade depending on current global events and how they may affect their performance.

On May 20, through the Spanish Community Center, Miss Aviles’ family business General Flooring Systems sponsored five separate $100 scholarships for the members of the winning team from Joliet Township High School. The team finished 1st place in Joliet with a 4.4% portfolio return ranking them 86th place out of 1130 teams in Illinois.
