During the weekend of February 15, 2019, the Joliet West Varsity Rifle Team had the opportunity to compete in the National Service Competition at Camp Perry, Ohio. They competed with schools from all over the country, including North Carolina, Montana, Alaska, and even a team from Germany participated.

This was the first time that the Joliet West Varsity Rifle Team competed in the National Service Competition. Last year, their average scores were in the 220’s. They are now scoring in the 240’s and 250’s. The Joliet West Varsity Rifle Team is instructed by LTC Benjamin White.

Student Samuel Servande said, “Even though we didn’t place at the top, we still did our best. During my experience I made many improvements that I can use in future. I was able to find my focus and learn techniques from the other competing teams.”

Student Paige Minor said,“Having the opportunity to go to the Ohio competition was extremely inspirational to not only me, but the whole team. It has allowed us to see our own potential. I am so thankful for this opportunity this year and this has motivated me to work harder at every practice so next year we will achieve even more.”

Student Bethany Flynn added, “Seeing the substantial change in the team from last year to this year and being able to go to this competition for the first time makes me proud to be the captain of this wonderful team. Not only have I been putting in 100% effort every day, during and outside of practice, but so have all the other teammates. We truly have worked hard for this competition and I couldn’t be happier with our progress. I know with our dedication we will continue to make improvements and we will be able to place in one of the top positions next year.”
